CSUSM’s Service Learning Program Named to National Honor Roll 2nd Consecutive Year

The Community Service Learning Program at Cal State San Marcos has been named to the 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is the second consecutive year the program has received the national award, a distinction that recognizes CSUSM’s leadership in helping to build a culture of service and civic engagement.

CSUSM students logged more than 95,000 hours of community service last year, ranging from homebuilding in Louisiana and refurbishing a neighborhood in Vista to assisting spinal cord recovery patients, performing puppet shows to teach science to local schoolchildren, and traveling to Guatemala to hand-deliver school supplies and assist rural teachers.

“This national recognition is further evidence of the ongoing and growing partnership between CSUSM and the communities we serve." said Darci Strother, director, Office of Community Service Learning.

Strother has accepted an invitation from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver to attend the announcement of the proposed California Agency on Service and Volunteering, the first cabinet-level agency on service in the country. The event will be held Feb. 20, 1 p.m. at Cal State Northridge.
