CSUSM Plans Social Justice and Equity Symposium March 21

California State University San Marcos will present a Social Justice and Equity Symposium Friday, March 21 at the Clarke Field House from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on topics including public welfare, community service learning, diversity of learning styles, safe and inclusive environments and a critical dialogue on race. Cost is $15 ($5 for students). To register, visit: www.therightcourse.net/conferences.

Keynote address will be presented by Christine Sleeter, Ph.D., professor Emerita at CSU Montery Bay. Her topic: “Un-Standardizing Curriculum and the Politics of Knowledge.” Sleeter will suggest how one can disrupt the silence around inequity and begin building learning environments that are equitable and just.

Featured speaker will be Joely Proudfit, Ph.D., associate professor and director, Tribal Governance, Management and Leadership Program, CSU San Bernardino. A descendant of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Mission Indians, she is the first member of her family to complete a high school diploma and serves as a role model for Native American youth.

On-site registration and continental breakfast runs from 8:30 – 8:45 a.m.

Annette Daoud, professor of education and chair of the symposium’s planning group, said the intent is to advance social justice and equity at CSUSM and the region it serves. “We plan to accomplish this through collaboration and engagement in rigorous and relevant research, teaching, learning and co-curricular activities.”
